Gossip Girl star Blake Lively has revealed a new range of low-calorie mixers for spirits, called Betty Buzz.
The Betty Buzz line comprises of five 266ml bottled mixers: Tonic Water, Sparking Grapefruit, Meyer Lemon Club Soda, Sparkling Lemon Lime, and Ginger Beer. The line contains between 30 to 70 calories, except for Meyer Lemon Club Soda, which is calorie-free.
The mixers are made with ‘real’ juice and ‘natural’ flavours, and are free from artificial flavours, colours, or sweeteners. Each bottle can make two drinks when combined with a spirit.
Lively said she has spent the past three years working on the range. Her husband, Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, is the co-owner of Aviation American Gin, which was acquired by Diageo last summer.
American actor Lively said: “I don’t drink. I know that’s odd coming from the wife of an infamous gin slinger. Over the past many years of mixing but not drinking cocktails, it became clear mixers are the unsung heroes of the drink world and deserve just as much love as alcohol.”
The range pays homage to Lively’s late father, Ernie, who inspired her to name the line after her grandmother and aunt, who were both known as Betty. Lively and Reynolds also have a daughter named Betty.
Lively explained: “My dad’s name was Ernest Brown Jr but he was known as Ernie Lively. He gave up his last name when he married my mom and any success he, or I, have experienced has been in a name that isn’t his.
“So when I was working hard to build this company, I wanted any success to be in a name that was meaningful to him. Betty was his mom and his sister’s name. Also, Ernie would not be the best name for a mixer.”
Lively added that the drinks provide “bubbles and flavours [that] feel like a buzz of joy”.
Betty Buzz is available to buy at select retailers across the US and online. A variety pack of 12 is priced at US$29.99, including shipping.
