If you’re seeking additional moisture or have mature skin, she suggests hydrating ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid; skin-soothing ingredients like niacinamide, green tea extract, and aloe vera; emollients like squalane to soften and soothe the skin; and barrier-boosting ingredients like ceramides. “Additionally, some that deliver antioxidant benefits can be especially helpful for those with mature skin to provide added protection throughout the day against free radical damage,” says Dr. Garshick.

If your skin is on the dry side, however, celebrity makeup artist Sophia Porter warns against using anything too thin or watery. “This skin type will normally see the ligaments catch on any patches or sink into lines,” she says. Alternatively, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, both Porter and Dr. Garshick suggest products that are oil-free and noncomedogenic, and contain niacinamide as it can help to calm redness and soothe the skin. “Opt for things that are oil-free, water based and possible demi-matte or matte finish,” says Porter.

Lastly, Dr. Garshick suggests using tinted moisturiser with adequate UV protection. “It is important to note that while some sunscreens may also have a tinted component and help to hydrate the skin, not all tinted moisturizers offer enough SPF benefits,” she says. “For this reason, it is important to look for products containing SPF 30 or higher.”

When should I apply tinted moisturiser in my skincare routine?

Tinted moisturisers are best applied after cleansing and applying face serums, serving as your final step before makeup, says Dr. Shirazi. However, Porter suggests tinted moisturisers as a replacement for foundation. “As long as my tinted moisturizer has a sunscreen, I can make it my last step,” she says. “If it doesn’t, I’d have to make sure I apply SPF and then the tinted moisturizer. You can definitely use this as part of skin prep before makeup to help cover and use less foundation or concealer. It’s also great for the no-makeup makeup look.”

However, depending on which tinted moisturiser you use and how you apply it, you may wish to wear additional sunscreen, says Dr. Garshik. “While a moisturiser with SPF can always provide added SPF benefits, it is important to note that in order to get the SPF protection that is on the label, enough needs to be applied—which is equivalent to the lengths of the index and middle finger for the face and the neck,” says Dr. Garshick. “If you aren’t applying enough of the tinted moisturizer to meet the labeled SPF, it is best to apply a sunscreen after the tinted moisturiser.”
