Today, though, something occurred to me as I was rifling through my bathroom shelf, I actually wanted to wear sun cream.
We all know by now that we need SPF daily to protect against skin damage, ageing and most of all – skin cancer. Though up until a few months ago I’d got into a bit of an SPF rut, wearing the same one day in day out and feeling very unexcited about it, too.
My followers were wanting to see me review others, so it became my mission to get testing, and I have them to thank for my newfound enthusiasm for SPF and the realisation that in 2021, there are so many different formulas, textures and technologies that you’d be hard pressed to not find one that you really WANT to use.
Let me share with you my five standout favourites of the ‘want to use’ category…
The latest innovation from my much trusted La Roche Posay is about as far from your “traditional” SPF as you could imagine. The formula comes out a light blue and melts into the skin just like your gel cream moisturiser, leaving the glossiest finish without residue. This is the one I’ve been reaching for the most recently, as it actually adds to the moisture levels and much welcomed glow to my complexion, it’s seriously impressive.
Another SPF launch that has changed everything you thought you knew about them! As the name suggests, Glow Screen adds a layer of pearlescent glow on the skin (not glittery!) more shimmery. Supergoop have definitely elevated the category of SPFs from memories of your mum drowning you in white cast to a must have product spilling out the bags of every cool girl you know. If you like to layer your glow, this one’s for you. It also kind of hybrids as a glow giver for those no makeup days where you just want a little something but no actual makeup. I would even say you could use on top of another SPF to feel like you’re basically sun protection superwoman!
I’m really into these gel formula SPFs as you can probably tell, and this one has a slight fragrance that is a cross between your posh Aunty and a day at the beach. No white cast, no pilling, just fast absorbing protection and doesn’t leave any tackiness (I actually like tackiness on the skin though ) but if you don’t this is the gel SPF for you.
Not only will you want to use this one, but you’ll want to proudly display it on your shelf! Ultra Violette offer an SPF wardrobe for every skin type and preference. They have disrupted the once oh‑so‑unfashionable SPF landscape and made them not only cool, but coveted. With a range of types and formulas available in their collection, I think this one had to take top spot for me. A milky serum textured SPF that feels fast absorbing and leaves a luminosity to my skin which I will never say no to! They’re also an Australian founded SPF brand, which means they go through VERY rigorous testing to achieve their SPF ratings and are the most well regulated worldwide.
I’m always conscious that I need to not only test what I want, but what others might want to. So when the Unseen Sunscreen from Supergoop arrived, it went straight to the top of my ‘to test’ box. It’s weightless, invisible and has a smoothing formula, clearly designed for oily/combination skin in mind. What struck me most about this one, is typically with oily skin marketed products you can often find pilling (where the product balls up on the skin) this one didn’t pill at all, and it didn’t leave the skin flat looking, just smoother. It’s truly unique and very cleverly formulated, leaves absolutely no residue or grease, but a smooth velvety feel that will welcomed those with an oilier skin, or looking for an SPF that doubles up as a makeup-primer.
