Donald Trump’s Failed Coup Might Cost Him His SAG Card

Entertainment:

First America kicked him out of the White House. Now SAG-AFTRA is ready to give Donald Trump the boot. On Tuesday the guild’s board held a special session regarding Trump’s status as a SAG-AFTRA member and whether the matter should be taken to a disciplinary hearing. It voted “overwhelmingly to find probable cause of a violation of SAG-AFTRA’s constitution,” per a newly released statement. (Violating constitutions and getting voted out of things: It’s the Trump way!) The board cited the deadly coup attempt at the Capitol, stoked by Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric and repeated lies about election fraud. The board also noted how Trump’s actions threaten the safety of journalists, many of whom are guild members.

“Donald Trump attacked the values that this union holds most sacred—democracy, truth, respect for our fellow Americans of all races and faiths, and the sanctity of the free press,” president Gabrielle Carteris said in a statement. “There’s a straight line from his wanton disregard for the truth to the attacks on journalists perpetrated by his followers.”

SAG-AFTRA’s disciplinary committee will next hold a hearing to determine whether Trump is guilty and should be expelled from the guild’s ranks. But per Deadline, the guild expulsion might not be that punitive in the scheme of things. If Trump is expelled, he would still receive his $90,776 pension for the work he’s done on SAG-covered shows, as well as an $8,724 pension for AFTRA-covered work. Still, getting kicked out of the guild would be just one of the many ways Hollywood has shunned Trump over the years, the SAG-card-shaped cherry on a very shameful cake.

Trump, who will become an ex-president in just a matter of hours, became a guild member in 1989. Prior to running for office, he was best known for hosting the Emmy-losing series The Apprentice and strong-arming movie productions like Scent of a Woman and Home Alone 2 into writing him pointless cameos—although that Home Alone cameo might get scrubbed out of the film if Macaulay Culkin gets his way.
