Late-Night Hosts Dunk on Trump for Randy Quaid Tweets

On Thursday morning, Twitter followers of President Donald Trump awoke with a flood of Randy Quaid tweets on their timelines. The president, who has spent weeks promoting discredited misinformation about election fraud, amplified five posts from the Independence Day actor.

In one tweet, a bearded Quaid read one of Trump’s own denouncements of Fox News while red and green lights flashed across the actor’s face.

“Look out kids, Santa’s been eating bath salts this year,” Jimmy Kimmel joked on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Randy Quaid is—let’s just say he makes Gary Busey look like Dr. Fauci.”

The Trump tweet Quaid chose to read was from November 12. “[Fox News] daytime ratings have completely collapsed. Weekend daytime even WORSE. Very sad to watch this happen, but they forgot what made them successful, what got them there. They forgot the Golden Goose. The biggest difference between the 2016 Election, and 2020, was [Fox News],” Trump wrote.

On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert took special delight in the fact that Quaid was simply reciting Trump’s own words.

“So, a crazy guy retweeted another crazy guy performing the first crazy guy’s crazy tweet,” Colbert said. “It’s a Möbius mess. It’s like watching two toddlers try to change each other’s diapers, but somehow, it’s even more full of crap.”

Quaid, an Oscar nominee for his performance in 1973’s The Last Detail, worked extensively throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, appearing in films such as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Quick Change, The Paper, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and Brokeback Mountain, in addition to the aforementioned alien invasion blockbuster. In recent years, however, Quaid’s fame has waned: he and his wife, Evi, sought asylum in Canada in 2010 after being arrested on burglary charges that were eventually dropped. Quaid has alleged that a group called the “Hollywood Star Whackers” once plotted to kill him, and claimed without evidence the organization may have been involved with the death of Heath Ledger. This year, his Twitter feed has been loaded with Trump propaganda, including a post from October where he wrote, “COVID grants Trump immunity.”
