Original Writer Insists Darth Maul Was Never Part Of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Entertainment:

The original writer for Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Hossein Amini, insists that Darth Maul was never part of the Disney Plus project.

Way back in 1999, Star Wars: Episode One-The Phantom Menace hit theaters. While reactions to the film were mixed at best, many of the characters and actors became beloved icons of the franchise. This included the character of Darth Maul and Ewan Mcgregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Darth Maul was apparently killed during the climax of The Phantom Menace but returned for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series and became a recurring antagonist with a grudge against Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character would return in Star Wars: Rebels where Kenobi put him down for good. The character also made a cameo appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story and many have wondered if he would appear in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series.

As the year has gone on and more details for the Disney Plus series have been revealed so to has been the cause of its delays. The main issue that Obi-Wan Kenobi suffered from was scripting issues. The original material written by Hossein Amini was apparently too dark for the people at Lucasfilm and the series had to be retooled. Rumors, however, began to circulate that one of the biggest changes was that Darth Maul was removed from the original scripts. Series director Deborah Chow has denied this, stating that as long as she was involved in the series the character was never involved with the series. Now Amini has confirmed that this was never the case.

During a recent interview on the Script Apart Podcast, the original Obi-Wan Kenobi Hossein Amini was asked if Darth Maul was ever involved in the series. Amini confirmed that in the discussions that he had regarding the series the character was never seriously brought up:

“No. No, I don’t think that was ever… no, certainly not. It goes back such a long way, there’s been so many cartoons now but certainly in the discussions I’d had there was never any real mention of that.”

Here is the synopsis for Obi-Wan Kenobi:

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.

Directed by Deborah Chow from Joby Harold’s scripts, the series stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie. The series will also see the return of legendary Star Wars composer John Williams, who scored a theme.
