‘Star Wars’: Mark Hamill Plays Coy About Luke Skywalker’s Future

[ad_1]
Entertainment:

The Last Jedi seemingly saw the end of Mark Hamill’s time as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. However, following his return in The Rise of Skywalker and a young Luke’s appearance on The Mandalorian, fans have wondered if Hamill would return for future projects. While Hamill played Coy about any future films, he says he’d prefer a younger actor take up the mantle for a series.

The newest Star Wars trilogy was set to serve as the end for many classic characters while introducing the world to a brand new cast. However, the divisive nature of the films soured many fans on where their favorite heroes’ stories ended, perhaps none more so than Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, who died in The Last Jedi before returning as a force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker.

With Daisy Ridley’s Rey getting a chance at redemption in the eyes of fans with a new Star Wars film, many fans wonder if Mark Hamill would return as Luke Skywalker. Following rumors of his return as a force ghost in the film, Hamill admitted that he couldn’t confirm either way if this was really the end for him as the character:

“One thing you learn working for Lucasfilm: everything is confidential. Everything is confidential,” he tells Esquire. “So, if I were involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. And if I were not involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. So, I don’t know. We’ll all find out together, I guess.”

While Luke Skywalker’s future on the big screen is unclear, Mark Hamill has been much more direct about if he’d return for a Star Wars Disney Plus show focusing on a young Luke. While he claims he was “very impressed” by the de-aging software used in The Mandalorian, he would much prefer a younger actor take up the mantle of Luke if the stories need to be told:

“People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi.’” he continued. “I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.”

Many fans would be quick to point to the Star Wars Legends stories that stories focusing on Luke Skywalker following Return of the Jedi deserve to be told. However, Mark Hamill has always emphasized Luke’s story needs a beginning, middle, and end. While it’s unclear when Luke’s end will truly be, it doesn’t seem Hamill has much interest in adding more to the middle.
