With the 2022 Met Gala just around the corner, take a nostalgic look back over the event’s most epic dresses ever

Having been held by New York’s Costume Institute since the 70s, 2020 saw the Met Gala – along with pretty much everything else – cancelled due to the pandemic. Having also been postponed in 2021 from its usual spot on the calendar, the 2022 extravaganza is finally able to bring back the ‘first Monday in May’ tradition.

Taking place on Monday, May 2nd, the Met Gala will mark the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit which is this year entitled In America: An Anthology of Fashion with the accompanying dress code of ‘Gilded Glamour’.

So what can we expect from the night? While the guest list is never entirely unveiled until the night itself, the theme is set to encourage a true celebration of American designers and extravagance. 

With Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds co-chairing the event alongside Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Regina King – with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Tom Ford and head of Instagram Adam Mosseri set to be honorary co-chairs – one thing we do know is that there’ll be a wealth of epic looks.

So while we wait patiently for Monday night, now is the perfect time to take a nostalgic look back at the Met Gala fashion moments that have thrilled us over previous years.

From a baby-faced Anna Wintour wearing golden sequins and Bianca Jagger in her unforgettable black corseted ball gown, to Rihanna‘s ridiculously long yellow cape and Beyoncé‘s see-through showstopper gown – if the stars didn’t turn heads, they didn’t make this list.
