Best supplements for joints: Collagen could help reduce painful symptoms

Fitness & Health:

We take the health of our joints for granted until the day movement is not as easy, and pain becomes a constant occurrence. Sadly, as with most things, when one ages so the quality of our muscles, skin and joints deteriorates. This is when supplementation can come in to help ease the pain and symptoms of poor joint health. Dr Sarah Jarvis spoke exclusively with Express.co.uk to discuss how collagen supplements could help to ease your joint pain.

“Joint pain is one of the most common causes of pain in the UK,” began Dr Jarvis.

She continued: “Regular exercise, keeping your weight down, ensuring you have the correct footwear with effective cushioning and having the correct posture if you’re working at a computer will all help.”

When asked the reason for some people’s pain in their joints, Dr Jarvis answered: “The most common reason for joint pain is osteoarthritis, which is caused by a failure of our body’s constant repair system to keep up with the wear and tear on our joints.

“Collagen is crucial for the health of the cartilage which lines our joints.

“While there are many supplements which are taken by millions of people for joint health, collagen supplements are among those with the best evidence.”

What is collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body.

It is the major component of connective tissues that make up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin, and muscles

Collagen has many important functions, including providing your skin with structure and strengthening your bones.

Consuming collagen may have a variety of health benefits, from relieving joint pain to improving skin health.

Taking its name from the Greek word Kolla (meaning glue), the trend for collagen supplementation has gained momentum in recent years, thanks to reports and studies outlining that oral supplementation of collagen peptides had beneficial effects that contributed to healthy bones and joints.

LQ collagen includes collagen peptides, which have been specifically found to improve joint pain and mobility in women with osteoarthritis, said Dr Jarvis.

“Importantly, the studies which show improvements are ‘double blind’ studies which confirm the benefit is real, not down to the ‘placebo effect’ (where patients feel better because they think they’re being given helpful treatment),” she said.

As with any new supplements, it’s advisable to speak with your GP before taking them.
