Best supplements for over 50s: Three ingredients recommended by a pharmacist

Fitness & Health:

With so many supplements available, which ones are right for you? If you’re past the age of 49, Kaura details the ones worth taking for age-related ailments – whether it’s joint pain, diabetes, or hair loss. “In winter, many individuals with joint conditions find that their sensations of pain can become more frequent,” she said. This is where “a cod liver oil supplement could help” due to its “anti-inflammatory benefits”.

“Research has shown that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids helps support the body’s anti-inflammatory response, which can in turn help protect the joints,” Kaura explained.

For those with arthritis, the consumption of cod liver oil supplements has even been shown to “help reduce the number of painkillers” taken to ease physical discomfort.

Kaura added: “There is also ongoing research into cod liver oil’s role in helping to reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart conditions.”

For those at risk of diabetes, or those with pre-diabetes, they may benefit from taking a biotin or magnesium supplement.

“The role of supplements in diabetes management is lesser known, however the right nutrients may help improve the person’s control of the condition,” said Kaura.

“For example, studies have shown that, in addition to insulin therapy, biotin can help control blood sugar levels for individuals who have type 1 diabetes.”

Kaura cautioned: “The role of supplements is hugely varied and you should always consult your GP before making any diet or lifestyle changes (including taking supplements) especially if you have an underlying condition.”

When it comes to hair loss, “vitamin and mineral supplements can help support hair growth”.

The stand-out supplements for Kaura are ones containing vitamins C and B, as well as those with minerals zinc and magnesium.

“Zinc is a nutrient which must be supplied through the diet, as it’s not naturally generated by the body,” she explained.

“Hair loss is often hormonal or genetic, and little can be done to prevent it,” she warned.

However, Kaura noted that “taking a supplement can help maintain growth naturally”.

Kaura works on behalf of LloydsPharmacy, which offers cod liver oil supplements, said to help maintain healthy bones and normal muscle function.

The pharmacy also has Hairburst Unicorn Vegan Hair Vitamins, which contains Kaura’s recommendations of vitamins C, biotin, and zinc.
