More than 40 dead after gasoline truck explodes in Haiti

More than 40 people were killed and dozens injured after a truck carrying gasoline exploded in Haiti, officials said Tuesday.

The blast occurred in the northern city of Cap-Haitien late Monday night.

Dozens of people have been hospitalized and hospitals are desperately seeking supplies to treat the injured, the Le Nouvelliste newspaper reported

Many of the injured are being treated in the courtyard of one hospital due to a lack of space.

“We are overwhelmed,” Dr Calhil Turenne told the outlet.

No further details were immediately available about the blast.

Police have not officially commented.

Former Prime Minister Claude Joseph tweeted he was “shattered” by news of the mass casualties, saying “I share the pain and sorrow of all the people.”

Dave Larose, a civil engineer who works in Cap-Haitien, told The Associated Press he was driving when he saw ambulances and a crowd of people gathered along a road around 1 a.m.

He said some people were using buckets to scoop up spilled gasoline from the street to take back to their house.

The explosion occurred as Haiti struggles with a severe shortage of fuel and spiraling gas prices.

“It’s terrible what our country has to go through,” Larose said.
