Texas cop under investigation for allegedly attending Capitol riot

A police officer from Texas has been placed on administrative leave after joining the mob of President Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol last week, authorities said Wednesday.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a press conference he learned over the weekend that one of his officers attended the Capitol Hill riot last Wednesday.

“Keep in mind, everyone has a First Amendment right to engage in First Amendment activity, but I wanted to make sure they didn’t pass beyond that and do something unlawful,” Acevedo said. “I can tell you that there is a high probability this individual will be charged with federal charges and rightfully so.”

The officer was relieved from his duty and is under investigation by the department and the FBI. The police chief added the officer has no history of disciplinary issues and believed he traveled to Washington, DC alone.

Acevedo did not identify the officer, but sources told KPRC the officer is Tam Dinh Pham, an 18-year veteran of the force.

Pham is expected to resign on Thursday, the outlet reported.

Federal law enforcement has arrested more than 80 people, including former members of the military, in connection with the violent siege.
