Horrifying video shows the moment a bleacher collapsed at a synagogue in the West Bank, injuring more than 200 people and killing at least two — including a 12-year-old boy.
The footage, posted on Twitter by a Walla News editor, shows the rear of the packed stands at the Givat Zeev temple giving way, and sending worshipers plummeting to the ground during the Shavuot service near Jerusalem.
The video shows others falling forward and sliding down the bleachers, many then fleeing the collapsed structure.
“When I arrived there was a big commotion, people shouted and ran everywhere telling me that the bleachers had collapsed with dozens inside the synagogue,” paramedic Moshe Tubolsky told the Jerusalem Post.
“A number of lightly wounded people were near the entrance and civilians led me to a severely wounded man who was lying on the floor nearby, unconscious and suffering from a head injury,” Tubolsky said.
The service was being held at the synagogue, although construction of the building was not complete and the owners did not have the proper permits, authorities said.
“This building is not finished,” a spokesman for the Israel Fire and Rescue service told a local TV station. “It doesn’t even have a permit for occupancy and therefore let alone holding events in it.”
In addition to the boy, who was not identified, a man in his 50s also died in the incident.
The deadly collapse comes nearly three weeks after dozens were killed and more than 100 were injured in a stampede at a holy festival in Israel.
The tragedy unfolded at the foot of Mount Meron during the annual Lag Ba-omer festivities when stands collapsed and prompted hundreds to try to flee to safety — only to have more than 40 people trampled to death.
Several New York Metro area residents were among the dead.
