Important progresses have been made on two construction projects, namely one bridge and one tunnel, of the China-built Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway in Indonesia despite the pandemic fallout.

PURWAKARTA/WEST BANDUNG REGENCY, Indonesia, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — Two construction projects of the China-built Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway (HSR) in Indonesia’s West Java province has achieved important progress.

The construction of an under-line main structure of a super large bridge for the Jakarta-Bandung HSR was completed on Wednesday.

As many as 87 piers and abutments and one continuous beam of under-line main structure of the whole bridge were totally completed, pushing project construction from bottom structure to the upper structure construction and transformation to the key stage of box girder erection process.

The bridge at the DK655 project site, situated in Purwakarta regency, was constructed by Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of state-owned hydropower project contractor Power Construction Corporation of China.

The super large bridge at the DK655 has a total length of 2,819 meters crossing the Citarum River, the longest and largest river in West Java.

On the same day, the Tunnel No. 10 of Jakarta-Bandung HSR safely traversed a 100-year-old existing railway line, making another breakthrough among the whole line of Jakarta-Bandung HSR.

Located in the low hilly area of Padalarang, a sub-district in the West Bandung district, the Tunnel No. 10, surrounded by Grade-VI-rocks which are easy to collapse, under-passes the existing railway at a large angle. The existing railway is a small-radius meter-gauge ordinary single-track railway built 100 years ago.

The Tunnel No. 10 project is a single 1,230-meter long tunnel with double lanes undertaken by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC). The construction began in June 2018.

The development of the Jakarta-Bandung HSR project is continuing to advance amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia following changes in safety and health procedures at the construction sites.

The 142.3-km long Jakarta-Bandung HSR project launched in 2016 will connect the country’s capital of Jakarta and West Java province’s capital of Bandung.

The high-speed trains expected to run at a designed speed of 350 km per hour will be the first of its kind in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

The traveling time from Jakarta to Bandung will be reduced from more than three hours to just about 40 minutes, in the hope it will greatly help spur economic activities along the line between the two cities. ■
