TOKYO, July 28 (Xinhua) — With Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games basketball tournament going underway, FIBA has offered some facts and stats about the sport at the event:

2004 – Argentina won men’s basketball gold at Olympic Games Athens 2004 as the last country other than the United States to win either the men’s or women’s Olympic tournament.

1936 – Basketball made its Olympic debut with the men’s tournament at the Berlin 1936 Games. The women’s tournament joined the Olympic programme at the Montreal 1976 Olympics.

1093 – Total score of Brazil’s shooting guard/small forward Oscar Schmidt at the Olympic Games as the leading scorer of the tournament.

156 – The USA men’s team set an Olympic record for points scored in a single match in their 156-73 victory against Nigeria at the London 2012 Olympics.

77 – The USA have won 23 of the 30 gold medals in men’s and women’s basketball combined, with a gold medal percentage of 77 percent in the sport.

55 – Schmidt dropped 55 points against Spain at the Seoul 1988 Olympics, the highest Olympics points scored by one player in a single match.

49 – The United States’ women’s team are on a 49-game winning streak at the Olympic Games since losing to Unified Team during the Barcelona 1992 semifinals. The all-time best Olympics basketball winning streak belongs to the USA men’s team as they won 63 games in a row from 1936 to 1972.

39 – Evladia Slavcheva of Bulgaria scored an Olympic record of 39 points in a women’s game to lead her team to a 98-87 win over South Korea at the Seoul 1988 Games.

37 – At Rio 2016, USA’s Tamika Catchings became basketball’s oldest Olympic gold medal winner at the age of 37 years and 30 days.

17 – When Spain guard Ricky Rubio led his team to the silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympics at 17 years and 308 days, he became the youngest Olympic medalist in men’s basketball history.

14 – Since Luka Doncic joined the senior national team, Slovenia is riding on a 14-0 run, including the FIBA EuroBasket 2017, the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament 2020 and their first Olympic game in Tokyo.

6 – USA women’s team has topped the podium at the last six Olympic Games.

5 – USA’s Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi could become the first athletes to win five gold medals in basketball.

4 – Spain’s talisman big man Pau Gasol could win a record-equaling fourth medal in men’s basketball, which makes him join USA’s Carmelo Anthony, and Gennadi Volnov and Sergei Belov of the former Soviet Union.

3 – Kevin Durant could join fellow American Anthony with a record three Olympic gold medals if he won the Tokyo 2020 men’s tournament.
