BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEOUL — South Korea reported 389 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Monday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 72,729.

The daily caseload fell below 400 in 54 days since Nov. 25, but it hovered above 100 since Nov. 8 owing to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

BEIJING — Thirteen COVID-19 patients were newly discharged from hospitals after recovery on the Chinese mainland Sunday, the National Health Commission said in a daily report Monday.

There were 1,301 confirmed cases still being treated, including 43 in severe conditions, the report showed.

BEIJING — The Chinese mainland on Sunday reported 109 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 93 locally transmitted cases and 16 arriving from outside the mainland, the National Health Commission said Monday.

Of the locally transmitted cases, 54 were reported in Hebei, 30 in Jilin, seven in Heilongjiang, and two in Beijing, the commission said in its daily report.

SANTIAGO — New cases of COVID-19 in Chile have increased 58 percent in the last two weeks, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, 4,340 new cases of the novel coronavirus were reported in the last day, for a total of 669,832 cases.

PARIS — France registered 16,642 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to figures released by the Public Health Agency on Sunday.

France’s cumulative total of COVID-19 cases now stands at 2,910,989. The death toll went up by 141 in 24 hours to reach 70,283.

JERUSALEM — The number of COVID-19 death cases in Israel has reached 4,005, the state’s Ministry of Health said on Sunday night.

The latest update added 16 deaths from the virus in Israel since the ministry’s previous update earlier on Sunday.

HAVANA — The Cuban Ministry of Public Health reported four deaths and 650 new cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Sunday, a daily record since the pandemic first hit the country.

“650 new cases were diagnosed, the highest number we have had so far,” said the ministry’s national director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran.

ALGIERS — Algeria on Sunday reported 222 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total infections in the North Africa country to 103,833.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Algeria rose to 2,836 after five new fatalities were recorded, said the Algerian Ministry of Health in a statement.

NEW YORK — Total COVID-19 hospitalizations reached 8,771 on Saturday in New York state, down from 8,888 on Friday, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday.

Of the 246,507 COVID-19 tests reported on Saturday in the state, 13,842 were positive, or 5.61 percent of the total, down from 5.77 percent one day earlier, said Cuomo, adding that the fatalities went up to 172 on Saturday, compared with 157 on Friday.

JERUSALEM — Israel’s Ministry of Health reported 5,825 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 547,689.

The death toll from COVID-19 in Israel reached 3,989 with 46 new fatalities, while the number of patients in serious condition increased from 1,082 to 1,177, out of 1,944 hospitalized patients.

RABAT– Morocco’s COVID-19 tally rose to 459,671 on Sunday as 806 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, the death toll mounted to 7,942 as 31 COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours.

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Ministry of Health reported on Sunday 645 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 608,232.

The ministry also reported nine new deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 12,944, and 1,531 more recovered cases, bringing the total recoveries to 569,429.

BEIRUT — Lebanon registered on Sunday 3,654 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of cases to 252,812 in the country, the Health Ministry reported.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus increased by 40 to 1,906 in Lebanon.
