Drunken crash hits home

News Today || Headlines Today

A 16-year-old teen has pleaded guilty following a drunken accident in which he crashed his mum’s car into a home near Kwinana.

The teenager, who cannot be named, faced Rockingham Children’s Court last Wednesday charged with one count each of careless driving, no authority to drive, exceeding 0.08g of alcohol and stealing a motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Mick Fallows told the court that on Saturday, June 25, about 4.40am, the teen had been out drinking with friends when he decided to go for a drive in his mum’s car so he could pick up a friend.

On the way home, the teen crashed into a home in Wandi.

The teen’s mother had reported the car stolen to police prior to the incident.

Police were called to the scene and the teen returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.13 and was placed under arrest.

Duty lawyer Justin Geoghegan said that “(the teen) made the decision to go for a drive, he admits that it was an immature and dangerous decision”.

“(His) mum has spoken to him about what could have happened … and how the consequences could have been quite different.”

Magistrate Sarah Dewsbury agreed that accident was very “serious”.

“Everyone sees those headline where young people are living their lives and then it can all be taken,” she said.

The teen received a nine-month licence disqualification and ordered to complete a three-month Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth program.
