Two unvaccinated WA healthcare workers have been put into hotel quarantine after a COVID protocol breach involving the transfer of three sick crew from a COVID-riddled ship.
Health Minister Roger Cook said the three crew who were removed from the MV Darya Krishna at Fremantle Port on Monday afternoon had tested positive for COVID-19.
The trio are being treated at Fiona Stanley Hospital, where two staff unknowingly rode a lift which had been used by the sick crew.
The blunder was blamed on a “mechanical failure”.
Mr Cook said an investigation had been launched into the incident.
The risk of the two healthcare workers contracting the virus was said to be “extremely low”.
One was a technician and the other a trainee nurse.
Both had chosen not to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Mr Cook said it was a “wake-up call” for hospital workers who had chosen not to be vaccinated.
The 17 crew remaining on the ship are due to be tested today.
The Minister said there was “no excuse” for the protocol beach — the third involving the transfer of sick ship crew — and he was “very angry”.
More to come.
