Mum forced to attend Esther Foundation to reunite with child

News Today || Headlines Today

A young mother claims she was forced to attend the now-disgraced Esther Foundation for substance abuse treatment as a condition of her prison parole — and allegedly told she would not be reunited with her child if she refused to go.

The Kalamunda-based Christian rehabilitation facility is the subject of numerous allegations of physical, sexual and psychological abuse against teenagers and young women, which prompted the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry in April.

That same month the Esther Foundation was placed into voluntary administration, blaming a “media campaign” that had resulted in significant reputational damage.

In a submission to the probe, the Alcohol and Other Drug Consumer and Community Coalition (AODCCC) — which advocates for people receiving treatment — relayed the story of a member whose substance use “led to justice intervention”.

The West understands the young woman was separated from her child when she was jailed and told reunification was unlikely unless she sought treatment for her substance abuse issues.
