Calgary police say suspect charged with murder after woman’s partial remains found

CALGARY – Police say a suspect has been charged in the death of a Calgary woman who was last seen more than five years ago after finding her partial remains.

The Calgary Police Service said last week that officers would be searching on Siksika Nation land for evidence in the disappearance of Tammie Doreen Howard, also known as Irish.

Acting Staff Sgt. Lee Treit says investigators have now identified her partial remains through DNA processes and continue to search for additional remains.

Howard, who was 49 when she vanished, was last heard from on Dec. 24, 2016, and reported missing by her family four months later.

Police announced last month that they believed her disappearance was a homicide after initially thinking it was a missing person case.

Thirty-six-year-old Natalie Renee Vinje, who’s also known as NV Evans, has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody pending a court appearance on Aug. 19.

“We have reason to believe that the accused did not act alone and continue to search for answers in this homicide investigation,” Treit said in a news release Wednesday.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 10, 2022.
