VAUGHAN, Ont. – Two young siblings were critically injured on Sunday afternoon when a car veered off the road and into their driveway in Vaughan, Ont., hitting them and a neighbour.

The 17-year-old boy behind the wheel of the Mercedes was arrested, York Regional Police said, while the 11-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother are in hospital.

“It is a devastating situation,” Const. Laura Nicolle told reporters at the scene. “I can’t imagine how that family is feeling right now. All of us are pretty heartbroken for them.”

She said the two kids had been outside “enjoying the weather, riding their bikes” before the crash.

She said their neighbour had come over to help with a bike chain when the car lost control and left the roadway, hitting all three people on the driveway.

The neighbour suffered minor injuries, but the children fared far worse.

“It’s very, very serious,” Nicolle said. “The injuries are quite significant.”

Nicolle said the teen was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

“The arrest was for dangerous driving,” she said, adding that police are looking into what charges to lay.

The crash happened in a residential area where the speed limit was 40 kilometres an hour, she said, so officers will be looking at whether speed was a factor in the collision.

“For something as horrendous and serious as this, we’re not going to rule anything out until we know for sure.”
