Emotional haka performed as Sean Wainui’s body begins journey back home

Family and friends have farewelled Māori All Black Sean Wainui with a spectacular haka days after the rugby union star’s death.

The 25-year-old died on Monday in a single-vehicle crash in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty region.

Wainui’s body is being transported back to Gisborne, according to wife Paige.

She posted a video of herself watching the emotional haka while embracing their children Arahia and Karawiki.

“This pain is unbearable,” she wrote on Instagram, adding that their were taking him home.

“I know your waiting for us. We’re on our way to Gizzy bringing you home now baby.”

Six weeks ago, Sean Wainui posted a video on Instagram of him teaching the haka to son Karawiki.

Wainui played for the Chiefs in Super Rugby and was signed with Bay of Plenty for the 2021 provincial season and played 10 games for the Māori All Blacks.

“He was an influential member in the teams he has been a part of and his presence will be missed,” head coach Clayton McMillan said.

“He epitomised everything you could possibly ask for in a player. He will be remembered for being a passionate, hard-working, proud Māori who was an exceptional player but more importantly father and husband.”
