Liverpool confirm trio positive for COVID-19 with Klopp and four others absent vs Chelsea

News Post || News Now:

Liverpool have confirmed that Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip will miss this afternoon’s trip to Chelsea after testing positive for COVID-19. The trio, who were not pictured in training earlier this week, are now isolating away from the squad and will be cheering on their team-mates from home.

Liverpool have bided their time before confirming the cases despite intense speculation on social media.

The Reds will also be without manager Jurgen Klopp following a suspected positive Covid test.

Klopp, who has remained back on Merseyside, has had his fair share of selection problems heading into the match that Liverpool simply cannot afford to lose if they are to catch leaders Manchester City.

Thiago Alcantara and Takumi Minamino are absent through injury while Divock Origi remains sidelined.

Meanwhile, Andy Robertson is suspended after his straight red card in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham.

Caoimhin Kelleher starts between the sticks in place of Alisson and the 23-year-old Irishman has shown he is more than capable of filling the void in recent times.

He saved penalties from Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand respectively in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final penalty-shootout triumph over Leicester.

Kostas Tsimikas also keeps his spot from Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at the King Power Stadium in place of Robertson.

Ibrahima Konate partners Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho will look to provide the muscle.

Liverpool are unchanged in attack with Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The African duo will be keen to sign off in style as they prepare to head off to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt and Senegal, respectively.

It’s not the first time Liverpool have battled Covid cases in recent weeks.

Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Thiago had all tested positive for the virus but have now completed their period of isolation.
