Matteo Berrettini fires warning to Djokovic after Rafael Nadal loss at Australian Open

News Post || News Now:

Matteo Berrettini has sent Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal a major warning for the rest of the 2022 season despite being beaten by the Spaniard at the Australian Open. Nadal sealed his passage to the final by beating Berrettini over four sets in Melbourne.

The 35-year-old Nadal has reached his first Australian Open final since 2019 and has the chance to win the tournament for the first time since 2009.

He has lost his last four finals at the Grand Slam, twice against Djokovic.

Nadal led Berrettini 6-3 6-4 but the Italian clawed a set back, taking the third 6-3.

However, the 20-times Grand Slam champion comfortably soared through the final set, winning 6-3.

Berrettini, though, has warned Nadal and Djokovic that they will face tougher tests against him in future Grand Slams.

The pair are the only two players to beat him at majors in the last year. Djokovic won the Wimbledon final against the reigning Queen’s Club champion, and defeated him at both the French and US Opens.

Asked about his record against the duo, the 25-year-old said: “It makes me feel like it’s time to beat them.”

Later on in his press conference, Berrettini opened up about his relationship with Nadal.

“For me, it’s all about the Australian Open more than anything else. It’s just an amazing event that I’ve been a little bit unlucky [at] with some injuries in my career.

“Also, I’ve played in some amazing finals with good chances against Novak Djokovic in 2012 and Roger Federer in 2017, I was close a couple of times.

“I was very lucky to win it once in my career and I never thought about having another chance in 2022, so I’ll just try and enjoy the victory today and then just try my best.”
