NBA championships are won in June (or July … or August), but the foundation is laid almost a year prior during the free agency period. We just saw how offseason signings like Bobby Portis and Jae Crowder helped shape the postseason, and those are the types of moves that teams will hope to make starting on Aug. 2, when they’re officially allowed to start negotiating with players.

Though pen can’t technically be put to paper until Aug. 6, most years we see plenty of deals agreed upon during the moratorium period. This year’s free agent class will be shaped by a couple of major decisions from superstar players. Kawhi Leonard and Chris Paul both have player options for next season. If they choose to decline them, they will become the unquestioned jewels of the 2021 market. The top unrestricted free agents are veteran point guards Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley, with restricted free agents John Collins and Lonzo Ball also expected to draw significant interest.

We’ll continue to update this post throughout the offseason as decisions are made, so be sure to keep checking back to see how your favorite team is shaping up for the 2021-22 season. Also, don’t put much stock in the rankings outside the top 20 or so, since beyond that it largely depends on what a specific team is looking for.
