News Post || News Now

Hello all, and happy Wednesday, which also happens to be the second day of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. John Breech is scouting offensive line help for Joe Burrow, so you’ve got me, Cody Benjamin, to deliver all the latest from around the NFL.

This is the Pick Six Newsletter. Now let’s get to it. (And please, do yourself a favor and make sure you’re signed up to receive this newsletter every day! You don’t want to miss our daily offerings of everything you need to know around the NFL.)

We’ve got tons of QB updates, reaction to Kyler Murray’s apparent demands, and much more:

  1. Today’s show: Is Cardinals QB Kyler Murray out of line?

John Breech joined Will Brinson on Wednesday’s “Pick Six NFL Podcast” to discuss hot topics around the NFL, namely Kyler Murray’s sudden agent-released statement, which all but demanded a new deal from the Cardinals.

“He’s, for all intents and purposes, throwing a hissy fit like a month after the season ends,” Brinson said. “If I were (general manager Steve) Keim, I don’t think I would give Murray a contract extension this offseason. … If you had asked me before this thing came out, I would’ve said yeah, give Kyler the contract. I think (he’s) a special player until he gets hurt … (but) it feels like he is desperate to get this done in a bizarre way.”

2. Aaron Rodgers poised to remain with Packers

Everyone wants to know the future of the star Packers quarterback. GM Brian Gutekunst told reporters at the combine that zero teams have made trade offers for the reigning MVP, despite lots of speculation about the QB’s future. CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, meanwhile, reports that “multiple teams who have interest in acquiring the future Hall of Fame QB remain skeptical he will see the market.” The assumption around the league, he adds, is that “Rodgers will get all the cash he wants to stay in Green Bay,” with the Packers dead set on running things back in 2022.

3. Insider notes: Garoppolo surgery will impact QB’s market

Speaking of potential QB moves, the 49ersJimmy Garoppolo requiring offseason shoulder surgery “most definitely will impact what has already been a fairly tepid trade market” for the veteran, per CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora. San Francisco has all but confirmed it’ll deal Jimmy G before 2022, but La Canfora doesn’t envision the team getting a lofty return.

Sources said that Garoppolo … should be able to throw in early July and “should be full-go by the start of the regular season, or right around then,” which is not ideal. Two GMs sniffing around on the quarterbacks essentially told me the same thing about what they thought of Garoppolo’s value before the news of his surgery broke. “I don’t think they get more than a four (fourth-round pick),” one told me. “Maybe a four that moves to a three (with incentives),” another said.

4. Buccaneers split on possibility of Tom Brady comeback

Tom Brady hasn’t left the headlines despite announcing his retirement in February, refusing to rule out a future comeback and watching as former teammates have predicted his return to the NFL. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, have differing internal opinions about the possibility of Brady actually suiting up in 2022. Coach Bruce Arians told reporters at the combine that Brady “slammed” the door on a potential comeback when the two last spoke, adding that Tampa Bay will struggle to land a proven veteran successor. But GM Jason Licht repeatedly left the door open for a Brady return, saying he’ll “leave the light on” for the QB and referring to Brady’s retirement as if it isn’t set in stone.

5. Colts remain undecided on Carson Wentz’s future

QB news is everywhere! Or in the case of the Colts, non-news. GM Chris Ballard confirmed this week that Indy is still sorting through Wentz’s future as the team’s QB. Reports previously indicated Ballard, coach Frank Reich and owner Jim Irsay were weighing their options at QB following Wentz’s poor finish to 2021. Ballard didn’t rule out Wentz returning for 2022, saying he recently met with the QB and believes the veteran will grow from criticism, but he refused to declare the former Eagles standout as either a short- or long-term answer in Indianapolis. If Wentz is ultimately traded or released, it’ll likely happen by the start of free agency, with Ballard saying the Colts are looking to finalize their plans within the next 10 days.
