Chargers’ Keenan Allen placed on reserve/COVID-19 list with positive test, per report

On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers placed star wide receiver Keenan Allen on the reserve/COVID-19 list, per NFL Media’s Taylor Bisciotti. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Allen is one of 11 NFL players who were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday due to a positive test.

It is unknown if Allen is vaccinated. If he is, he will be able to return to the team once he has registered two consecutive negative tests 24 hours apart and is asymptomatic. If he is not vaccinated, then it is potentially very bad news for the Chargers. Not only will Allen miss Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants, but his status for next Thursday’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs would be in question as well, as unvaccinated players are forced to spend a minimum of 10 days away from facilities.

The four-time Pro Bowler is coming off of a five-catch, 34-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. In 12 games played, Allen has caught 86 passes for 929 yards and four touchdowns. The Chargers currently hold the No. 6 seed in the AFC, and not having Allen for a game or two would not be ideal for a team right in the thick of a very jumbled playoff picture. L.A.’s 41-22 win over Cincinnati on Sunday helped it surpass Joe Burrow and Co. in the current playoff standings, but the Chargers are now entering the most pivotal stretch of their season.
