Lamar Jackson can now officially add Madden cover athlete to his résumé. EA Sports released the trailer for its upcoming installment of the Madden NFL franchise along with the reigning league MVP donning the cover, which was also unveiled. The Madden NFL 21 trailer previews better ball carrier control with its skill stick along with new pass-rush controls on defense. It is available for pre-order now, which will give gamers the ability to play the MVP Edition three days earlier than when the game is scheduled to make its official release on August 28.

“I grew up playing Madden and owned every copy I could get my hands on, so to be on the cover of Madden NFL 21 is a dream come true, especially when the cover represents so much of my story,” Jackson said in a statement. “The welcome to the Madden family from around the league and from fans has been phenomenal and I think people will have a lot of fun with the new features coming in this year’s game.”

While gamers will simply be excited to try out the newest edition of the franchise, Jackson’s presence on the cover may bring about some fear in Ravens fans as the Madden curse does loom large over every cover athlete each year. As it relates to Jackson specifically, Baltimore football fans could be even more cautious nowadays after seeing him launch over a jet ski last weekend. Still, there’s plenty of optimism that Jackson will be just as dominant in 2020 as he was during that MVP season in 2019. To help ease the minds of the Ravens faithful, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the cover athlete in 2019 and ended up winning Super Bowl LIV and earning Super Bowl MVP honors, so the curse may be a thing of the past.

2020 has been a big year for EA Sports and the Madden franchise as the gaming company just inked a contract extension with the NFL to exclusively produce and market NFL action video games through at least the 2025 season and has a chance to extend through 2026.
