Tim Tebow set for dramatic NFL return with Jacksonville Jaguars

News Post || News Now:

Tim Tebow, the left-handed quarterback whose faith and penchant for on-field moments of reflection led to a nationwide craze in the United States, is set for a remarkable return to the NFL.

Tebow, who was a first-round pick for the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft, arrived in the NFL to much fanfare after earning a string of titles in college football, including the 2007 Heisman Trophy – the award given to college football’s best player.

But, despite his superb college credentials, Tebow’s NFL career failed to hit the heights some expected of him, with his left-handed throwing motion criticised by some analysts, while others felt he was better suited to playing in a different position than quarterback.

He ended up bouncing from team to team through his short career, going from the Broncos to the New York Jets, before joining the New England Patriots, then the Philadelphia Eagles, in non-playing stints.

Tebow eventually called time on his American football career to pursue a new sporting endeavour – baseball – and signed a contract with the New York Mets.

But now, in a surprise development, it looks like it may be “Tebow Time” in the NFL once again.

That’s because the 33-year-old is on the verge of a sensational return to the NFL following a successful workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, Tebow didn’t work out in his familiar position of quarterback. Instead, he did so in a position he had been recommended to play earlier in his career, at tight end.

News of the workout gave NFL Draft week a little light relief, with many fans and pundits joking about the development.

But it seems the Jaguars were absolutely serious in their motives, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero have now reported that the Jaguars are set to offer Tebow a route back into the NFL, with Tebow potentially rejoining his former college coach Urban Meyer, who joined the Jaguars as head coach in the off-season.

Rapoport initially tweeted, “The #Jaguars are planning to sign QB-turned-TE Tim Tebow to a 1-year deal, per me and @TomPelissero, a deal that could be official in the next week or so. Nothing done yet.

“But he’ll have a chance to make the team to reunite with his mentor and college head coach Urban Meyer.”

Rapoport then expanded on that news on NFL Network show NFL Now, saying, “My understanding is Tim Tebow is expected to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars and his former college coach Urban Meyer.

“Nothing is done yet, but this is expected to be official in the next week or so.

“So Tim Tebow, who actually has had a couple of different workouts with the Jacksonville Jaguars – just some opportunities to show Urban Meyer and the rest of the Jaguars staff that he can make the transition from quarterback to tight end, his new position.

“He has such a close relationship with Urban Meyer. This makes a lot of sense.

“It is expected to be a one-year deal where Tebow will have the chance to make the team, to make an impression, and we’ll see where this goes from here.

“But yes. In the next few days – in the coming days – Tebow will be expected to be back in the NFL.”
