Adele has taken on hosting duties for this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, and she didn’t hold back in her opening monologue.
The ‘Hello’ singer addressed the one thing that’s been discussed to death in the press recently –– her weight.
“I know I look really, really different since you last saw me, but, actually, because of all the COVID restrictions and the travel bans, I had to travel light and only bring half of me, and this is the half I chose,” she joked as she took the stage at the beginning of the show.
Adele, 31, has reportedly lost over 44kgs in total over the last few years. She first surprised fans with her ‘new look’ on Instagram late last year.
She also revealed that her highly-anticipated new album isn’t yet complete, which is why she’s chosen to host the show, rather than be a musical guest.
“My album is not yet finished and I’m also too scared to do both,” she said. “I’d rather put on some wigs, have a glass of wine or six and just see what happens!”
It was the British singer’s appearance as a musical guest on SNL in 2008 that helped break her career in the USA.
“I was the musical guest back in 2008, when Sarah Palin came on with Tina Fey,” she recalled from the SNL stage. “So obviously, a few million people tuned in to watch it and the rest is now history.”
“I don’t know anything about American politics,” she continued with a laugh. “I’m British. And I don’t want to say anything too political, so I’ll just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything.”
Adele appeared in a number of sketches during the show, including one where she played a contestant on The Bachelor and sang along with some of her old songs, like ‘Someone Like You’.
She ended her monologue by revealing that she’s very nervous to be hosting on live television. “I swear a lot. Like, a lot, a lot,” she said. “Because I’m British, I tend to skip over all those medium [swear words] and go straight to the worst ones.”
They then showed her SNL swear jar that was implemented to keep her from swearing on the show –– which, naturally, was already overflowing.
Social media was flooded with comments from people who think Adele absolutely nailed her hosting duties –– and we’d have to agree.
