It’s the hottest new product to spice up your pandemic lockdown.
A canned chili made with the world’s top two spiciest peppers was released this week by the major US food firm Hormel, the company said.
The eye-watering concoction features ghost peppers and Carolina reapers — notorious mouth-burners that have in some cases caused vomiting and injuries.
“However fans want to enjoy their chili, for a short time they can lay stake to a pretty bold claim: That they’ve tasted the hottest canned chili in the world,” Hormel rep Sarah Johnson said of the new product, Ghost Reaper World’s Hottest Chili with Beans.
Culinary daredevils can get their hands on the spicy new stew for a limited time at Target.com, the firm said.
The Carolina reaper, from South Carolina, was named the hottest pepper in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013. It boasts a sizzling 2.2 million Scoville heat units — the scale used to measure spiciness.
The ghost pepper, which grows in India, comes in at 855,000 Scovilles. Both peppers are hundreds of times hotter than a jalapeño.
In 2016, a 47-year-old California man who ate a puree of ghost peppers on a hamburger was hospitalized with a tear in his esophagus, according to the Journal of Emergency Medicine. Others have reported intense headaches and vomiting from eating Carolina reapers.
It wasn’t immediately clear how much of the peppers would be used in Hormel’s canned chili.
